79% of residences and businesses in Miles City are located within the natural floodplain or floodway at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Tongue Rivers.  Because Miles City is the business, educational and medical hub of eastern Montana, a flood event in the community would be catastrophic to not just the community, but the entire eastern Montana region.  Following completion of a feasibility study in 2014, it was determined that construction of a levee system meeting the requirements of FEMA accreditation is essential to the safety and prosperity of the Miles City community and the vast eastern Montana region it supports.
